About the Course

This course provides a comprehensive overview of residential flood mitigation through home elevation and foundation floodproofing solutions. Participants will explore structural elevation techniques, foundation types, and the equipment used to lift and protect buildings in flood-prone areas. The course also reviews FEMA Technical Bulletins, the NFIP, ASCE 24, and relevant building codes that influence flood design strategies. Emphasis is placed on compliance, budgeting, safety, and environmental considerations to help stakeholders—from architects and engineers to code officials and contractors—navigate elevation and wet floodproofing approaches. Through expert insight from Floodproofing.com and the International Association of Structural Movers (IASM), attendees will leave with practical knowledge to improve flood resilience and support sustainable design in at-risk communities.

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1. Describe the principles of home elevation and wet floodproofing, including when and where each is appropriate for flood mitigation, foundation repair, or space expansion.
2. Identify key codes, standards, and FEMA guidelines (including TB-1, ASCE 24, and NFIP) that impact design, and compliance in flood zones.
3. Evaluate structural and site-specific factors such as foundation types, elevation methods, and mitigation equipment used in lifting and protecting buildings.
4. Plan for the logistics, safety protocols, budgeting, contractor selection, and legal considerations necessary for successful elevation or floodproofing projects.
